Swet Bhairav - श्वेत भैरव
Once a year, the god pours beer.
He is Bhairav, the fierce form of Shiva, set at the old palace gate in Kathmandu to turn back sickness and ruin. A giant gilded face, kept behind a wooden screen for most of the year. On one night of Indra Jatra, the screen opens, and a pipe is fitted into his mouth. Rice beer runs out of it. The crowd presses in underneath with open mouths, and what leaves the god as drink arrives as blessing.
Front: A gilded crown ornament from the mask.
Back: Swet Bhairav ringed in flame.
